New goats, old goats, blackberry jam

Just a quick breakdown of the latest news at Wookey Farm:

The new nanny goats are settling in, they have mastered the ramp but are still pretty nervous while being milked and mostly try to kick the milking clusters off and stand on my hands.

Some sad news: one of the old goats developed a form of crohn's disease which made her very thin and ill. She stopped coming to be fed with the other nannies at milking time so has had to be put down. Also, Big Daddy never recovered from his illness and has gone to a better place too :(

On a more cheerful note, I have learned how to thwart Tiny Tina: she squeezes to the front of the queue so I open the door a little bit so only she can get through and once she's on her own its much easier to send her back down without her stealing any food. And usually I shout "hahahaHA! Got you again Tina!" Just to really hammer home that I have outsmarted a baby goat.

Priddy has given up on mice and has taken to catching slugs. Not much of a challenge for her but at least they don't die as easily, and they don't make any sad noises. Usually when she's finished attacking a slug you can return it to the wild and it goes on to live a long, happy life.

The goats and the pig have all been mucked out and fresh straw put down so they are very happy with their new beds. Seriously, the nannies didnt want to leave their bed to have dinner, they were so excited.

Ali has started making blackberry jam and selling it the farm shop. He's a really tough entrepreneur. The other day he said, "mummy you still owe me £20 for that icecream I made", baring in mind Sarah provided all the ingredients, that's just £20 in labour costs. For an 8 year old boy.

Less than 2 weeks remaining at Wookey Farm, which is sad in some ways, but I've learned a lot and am excited to see what the next one has in store for me. And also goats need hay and I have hay fever so maybe livestock farming isn't for me...
