Pitt Farm Debrief

I have been meaning to write a blog post for weeks but it just hasn't happened. Now I am back in Keynsham and have absolutely no excuse, so here we go: a Pitt Farm debrief.

I will never get over how funny chickens are.

As I mentioned before, I've been doing a lot of winter prep: processing fruit and veg (mainly freezing, the Bensons are living the dream and have 5 freezers) and helping clear the meadow.
In the meadow

Pitt Farm has several cider apple trees but they didnt produce many apples this year. I picked the few that were there (in the rain I might add, whilst fending off greedy horses) and Harry and I made them into juice. Harry was super excited for apple juice day. We took about 2 bins of apples to a friends house where they had rented the local apple crusher and press. We made the juice, bottled and pasteurised it. For those interested, the press was a water powered one. The juice was b-e-a-utiful.

I also got the opportunity to butcher a deer. A woman accidentally killed the deer with her car and apparently, everybody in Wiveliscombe has the Bensons on speed dial in case they inadvertently create some roadkill. She was only a small deer so it didnt take Harry long to skin and gut her. Me, Kate and their youngest daughter Sizzle spent the evening butchering her, taking the meat from the bones and separating out what was worth eating. It was pretty sad that the deer died, but nice that she didnt go to waste.
Sizzle enjoying being a butcher a bit too much (she kept the kidneys to dissect)

On the goat farm everything was new to me so there was lots to learn. At Pitt Farm the tasks were far more familiar. But I've butchered a deer, made my first ever sourdough loaf, and learned a little bit about keeping turkeys and maintaining a wildflower meadow. I've also learned some things about myself. That I don't like to leave jobs unfinished and that I am much more opinionated than I thought I was.

The next farm is near Lampeter in Wales. Me and abbie are driving there next thursday so watch this space. ALSO, I have finally set up an online shop for my paintings. The nuMONDAY website is not very… intuitive, so I apologise in advance for that. Link below. Peace out. Be excellent to each other. Etc etc.
