Spring
Hello friends! Sorry I havent written for a while. Life is very busy here, even busier now because, in light of current circumstances, Jon, Laura and co. are planning to start up the food co-op within the next week or so rather than in June as originally planned. More details of that as events unfold.
Oh yeah, and in case you hadn't heard there's some sort of virus going around and it's quite a big deal. We have been fairly sheltered on the farm since we get a lot of food locally or in bulk from the whole food people, and we don't go out all that much. But things are starting to hit home now, had to cancel visits from friends and fam, and news from friends overseas has been troubling. Tim, the WWOOFer who was supposed to be coming to join us from Australia has had to stay home, but happily we have Gal and Isaac from Israel who are lovely and funny and interesting.
The Dragon (Esme) has now officially renounced her given name and only responds to Light Fury. We have sold off a lot of the old laying hens to people suddenly worrying about where their eggs are going to come from and the new hens are laying beautifully. Also, demand for chicken is through the roof, and boxes of eggs are selling well too. Perhaps this situation is causing people to think a little harder about where their food comes from and how precarious the current systems are. Perhaps a food revolution could be around the corner.
Spring is very much on the way: dandelions, celandines, dock, wild garlic and all the rest are growing with gusto. The fruit trees are budding and blossoming and the mud (o glory be!) is drying up under the influence of a strong easterly wind and a spot of sun. The new flock of babies has also brought us some springtime joy.
We are trying to operate as a community rather than just a collection of random people. Communicating better and supporting each other practically and emotionally. The world is very scary and stressful right now and can get on top of us sometimes, but we need to learn that we can rely on one another (me especially, asking for help has never been easy).
Hope you are all staying safe and looking out for each other. Please take coronavirus seriously, social distancing and isolation are important to slow the spread of the virus so that our health services have a better chance of coping.
Wishing you all some hope and peace
