Land

If one more person
Suggests I leave the country
I swear I will scream

As if I could simply
Leave the land that raised me
The earth-womb that sheltered me
The trees, hills, beaches, rivers that schooled me
I would not know the names of the trees in a strange land
Or be able to hear the time of year in the birdsong
The winds would be strangers to me
The rain would not be my friend
If I posed a question to the soil and stone
They would not answer
And there would be no stories to anchor my heart

It is not such an easy thing
To go adventuring
To begin again
In exile
It is not always noble
Or brave
And if one more person
Suggests it to me
The thread of my patience will snap
And I will lose my shit
And scream

  1. Love it. But who's thinking you need to leave the country? Curiouser and curiouser said Alice.... XX

    1. We've been talking a lot about the UK and its various downsides: lack of access to land, the politics, difficulties facing farmers, etc. Many folk are turning their eyes to other countries, some are even moving there. No right answers :(
