At Budleigh

At Budleigh
Perched high above the sea
Watching children on the beach
Throw stones
With shrill yelps
And bellows
Arms held high in triumph
As they fling pebbles
And their parents sit
On the stones
Reading
And talking.
Its safe here
Quiet
Just the silver sea
Softly beating shingle
And I wonder
How can we bring children
Into this world
Where everything
Is broken?
But I know the answer
Even as I ask it
Because it is our nature
As alive beings
To create life
As I wrote
That last line
The sun broke
Through the sheet of cloud
Suddenly
Illuminating the beach
The children
My hands
My phone
For the briefest moment
