I wake up

Struggle out of bed

Wash

Make porridge

(Cinnamon, raisins, banana, creamy milk)

Eat it by the fire

The birds still sing

The mud thaws

The sky a pearly dome

Though by rights it should be

Burning, hellish, vermillion

The collapse of all life is at hand

Yet

Coffee is brewing

And later I will buy peanut butter

And pick the child up from school

I suppose

These little things are important

They make us human

When fear threatens

To blow our humanity away

Like the last shrivelled leaves

On the apple tree.
